JAMIE DORNAN

HOW TO DOMINATE HOLLYWOOD

He has managed to become one of the most talked about if Hollywood&rsquos rising stars. His effortless flair as a model previously lead him to being named the male equivalent of Kate Moss, but the past is the past, and he has proven to be more than just a fashion icon since traversing to the big screen where he is now synonymous with the masochistic Christian Grey. Here&rsquos how Dornan went from Calvin Klein pin up to on-screen star.

Before Jamie Dornan turned the world of cinema, TV and book adaptations upside down, was just your  average male model. The actor, born 1 May 1982 of a Northern Irish home went on to model for three consecutive seasons of Calvin Klein products, adding Dior, Hugo Boss, Banana Republic and Zara to his   CV as he went along. His fiery stare, elegant physique, impressive muscles&hellip He enbodies nothing but the enviable meeting point of romance and sex appeal.     It was little surprise then, that he became known as   the world&rsquos &lsquobest male model.&rsquo

Sofia Coppola&rsquos 2006 movie &ldquoMarie Antoniette&rdquo staring Kirsten Dunst, was the first major motion picture in which Dornan stared, playing the character of Count Axel Fersen. Viewers collectively noted Dornan&rsquos presence as something to watch out for later on.

This was followed by a role in David Rocksavag&rsquos 2009 work &ldquoShadows in the Sun&rdquo along with two short films &ldquoX Returns&rdquo and &ldquoNice to Meet You&rdquo which brought him to greater attention across the pond until he became a familiar face to TV audiences across the country in 2011 beginning the first of what would turn into a whole five seasons of the hit television series &ldquoOnce Upon A Time&rdquo. Dornan spent around  three years as a key player in the fairy-tale-meets-real-life series, breathing life  into both the characters of Sheriff Graham and The Huntsman. After his appearances here, as well as the 2013 series &ldquoThe Fall&rdquo in which he played the role of Paul Spector, the public demanded more.

And so it was that Dornan was ready to hit the big   time. British writer E. L. James&rsquo bestseller &ldquo50 Shades of Gray&rdquo had taken the world by storm and a film version was to follow riding on the waves of the book&rsquos massive success. The first question on everyone&rsquos lips was whether there was anyone who could possibly fill the role of the fantasy Christian Grey in cinema form.    The surprise announcement came that the role would be destined for Charlie Hunham, however at the last minute he shunned the role. Everyone held their breath as the producers set off on another search across the globe for someone to fill the role. Jamie Dornan, the model who those in the  industry has christened the male Kate Moss emerged as the chosen one.

For fans of the book, Jamie Dornan&rsquos selection to play Christian Grey caused a frisson of excitement. Before that point the man who had been  known for his role  in the BBC series The Fall, was on his way to becoming   the sexiest man on the planet.

The creator of the  hit US TV show &ldquoGirls&rdquo, Lena Dunham, was just one of many in the industry who praised the choice. &ldquoI&rsquom a big fan&rdquo she Tweeted of Jamie, continuing to comment that she &ldquowasn&rsquot allowed to be attracted to him on The Fall because he played a sex murderer. 50 Shades is my   big chance!&rdquo

So what did Dornan himself make of this huge opportunity? Without a sliver of a doubt, this role would make or break the model-turned-actor. &ldquoI don&rsquot have  an ounce of fear. It was my first chance to meet everyone when we did the test shoot with Sam (Taylor-Johnson, director) and Dakota (Johnson, co-star). Quite a lot of people love this book but I&rsquom not under pressure from these people. The only thing I&rsquoll say is that I absolutely need to give my all to fill the role of Christian Grey. I can&rsquot guarantee that it&rsquoll please everyone &ndash just as my being chosen failed to please everyone &ndash and I&rsquom going to do all I can.&rdquo

Dornan was the real deal &ndash chosen in his first round of video auditions. However, he wasn&rsquot called until he left the Hunnam project. At that point he still hadn&rsquot lost hope. &ldquoWhen one door clses another one opens&rdquo was his simple response.

And he was right. The producers mulled it over and wanted to be sure. Dornan jumped on a plane headed straight for Los Angeles and met the next day with his soon-to-be co-star on the set Dakota Johnson for a full day of intense test shoots. The two performed the opening chapter of the book in which Ana goes to Christian&rsquos Seattle based office for the first time to interview him, as well as the crucial final scene. Dornan was given a formal offer just as soon as he was swarmed upon by the media and paparazzi to be their new plaything.

Next to no one complained about Dornan being chosen for the role of Christian Grey. After all this was the face of Calvin Klein, and his first plan before getting undressed on set was to get into shape. Dornan said   of his new character &ldquoI didn&rsquot imagine Christian to be an extremely buff guy, but it struck me that he would be the type to at least stay on form and look after himself&rdquo. &ldquoI&rsquom someone who looks after themselves a fair bit too, you know, I do a little sport here and there, but I have absolutely no intention of building up   muscles. I don&rsquot think that would be quite right.&rdquo The result was the perfect balance.

Actress Amelia Warner, who married Dornan in 2013, is these days preoccupied with looking after the pair&rsquos daughter Dulcie. The two remaining books in the series, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are in the pipeline for movie production. They will see release  in 2017 and 2018 respectively, amidst high expectations from viewers of the first steamy motion picture.
